BSA’s Sailors-of-the-Year are nominated based on their “on-the-water” success in local and international races during the previous year’s sailing season. Winners can be named in up to three categories—Male, Female and Youth (18 and under). This year there were no nominations in the Female category.
Malcolm Smith, named Sailor-of-the-Year in the Male category, sails in both Sunfish and Laser classes, and in 2008 placed first in April’s International Race Week Regatta, first in September’s Cable & Wireless Laser Regatta and, later that year, captured the Laser National Championship. Malcolm also represented Bermuda at the Sunfish South American Championships and the Sunfish Worlds, in which he placed second and fourth respectively.
Cameron Pimentel, Sailor-of-the-Year in the Youth category, sails Laser Radials and performed exceptionally well in open-class competitions, in which youth and adults race together. In 2008, Cameron was the top Bermudian in several international competitions, including the Orange Bowl, Mid-Winters West and the Canadian Laser Nationals. At the Canadian Laser Nationals, he also earned the distinction of being named Canadian Youth Champion and Nova Scotia Youth Champion.
Somers Cooper, President, Bermuda Sailing Association, states: “We are tremendously proud of the level of skill and success that both Malcolm and Cameron have achieved. Not only are they strong competitors here in Bermuda, but they are also very competitive while representing Bermuda in the international sailing arena. Their accomplishments are a real statement about the calibre of sailing talent we have here on the island.”
Bermuda Sailing Association is the governing body for the sport of sailing in Bermuda and is recognised by the Bermuda Government and the International Sailing Federation. It was formed more than 30 years ago by the sailing clubs of the island, the racing classes and individuals who participate in sailing activities. The BSA seeks to further the sport of Sailing in Bermuda. You can learn more about BSA on www.bermudasail.bm.
