Owen Siese had a sizzling final day of competition to climb to 5th place overall at the 2009 Optimist North American Championships sailed on Andres Bay, Dominican Republic. The regatta finished on Tuesday and Siese was presented with his trophy at the prize presentation that same evening. The 14 year old finished strong scoring a 19, 9, 3, 1 on the final day sailing against 197 sailors from 23 countries. The event was won by Christopher Williford of the USA followed by Brian Higgins of Argentina and Axel Sly of the USA.

Sailors who recieved first place finishes were presented with "Bullet" awards of which Owen received 3 for races three, five and eleven. Siese had more 1st place finishes than any other sailor in the regatta. Compatriot Dimitri Stevens also received a "Bullet" award for his victory in race eight.

Coach Paul Doughty commented. " I was really happy with the team's performance overall. The boys exhibited tremendous team spirit and everyone tried their level best. Each sailor had some good races. Owen, Dimitri and Antonio all had an impressive final day (4 races) to move up in the standings). The bigger sailors suffered on the last day with the dying, lighter breeze and really choppy, confused seas. I think this event was good preparation for the World's team sailing next month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. "

Bermuda just missed out on receiving the prize for the best North American team in the Team Racing event, losing out to Curacao on a tie breaker and taking 5th place overall in that competition.

Final results (198 boats, 11 races):
    Owen Siese - 5
    Mackenzie Cooper - 28
    Dimitri Stevens - 29
    Kalin Hillier - 30
    Connor Astwood- 63
    Rahiem Steede - 91
    Antonio Bailey - 110
    Makai Joell - 156
